Teach Like Kay Tolliver

Teach like Kay Tolliver! Watched this great video in class. We have a lot to learn from her!

Believe in the students. Do not be afaid of them - they will eat you alive! You can learn while having fun!

You can keep trying and she will not put you down. If at first you don't succeed - try and try again. Keep working at the problem, don't get frustrated by the problem.

There is more than one way to skin a cat - different ways you see it.

Get their interest. Make the lesson fun! Use humor. (put yourself out there - take a risk - the kids will be more likely too also). Let them have fun - so they will not be fearful. Get the kids to explore and discover on their own so they will not be 'told' everything.

Cut two attached circles into a square. Use manipulatives.

Estimating - guess raisins in a box (dress up and sing Heard it Through the Grapevine)

When working with probability (3 shirts 4 pants) - give paper clothes - try number of outfits. Show on paper answer and strategy used to get that answer.

WRite in your journals about what you learned today. Encourages writing in math class (for those students that are good at math, but not at English).

"How many people bear the name of Salvador"...

Can't teach unless there is discipline. The look!

Respect - I respect my students and in return I expect them to expect me. Discipline with love. Lots and lots of homework. Very high expectations for each child.

Math trail - with math questions, a game.

I truly believe they can be anything they want to be - but THEY have to believe it. I help them believe it.
